About Powerball
It’s America’s Game! Since 1992, POWERBALL® has inspired the country with a chance to become a millionaire, while raising $28 billion for good causes supported by lotteries. Powerball set a world record jackpot of $2.04 billion in November 2022. The record prize was won by a single ticket sold in California.
On August 23, 2021, Powerball launched a new Monday drawing, which expanded the weekly lineup of Powerball drawings to three nights a week: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. In addition, a new add-on featured called Double Play® was launched that gives players in select jurisdictions another chance to match their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Drawings are broadcast live every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee. Drawings are also live streamed on Powerball.com.
The Powerball jackpot grows until it is won. Players select five numbers from 1 to 69; and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. Players can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times with the Power Play® option for an additional $1 per play. NOTE: The Match 5 + Power Play prize is always $2 million. The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
Players can play their Powerball numbers again in the Double Play drawing for an additional $1 per play. The Double Play drawing is held after every Powerball drawing on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Double Play is available for purchase in 13 jurisdictions.Powerball jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize as an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump sum payment. Both advertised prize options are prior to federal and jurisdictional taxes.
The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

- 6% of a ticket sale goes to retailer commissions
- 9% of a ticket sale goes to operating expenses
History of Powerball
Powerball celebrated its 30th Anniversary in April 2022. The first Powerball drawing held on April 22, 1992 had 15 participating lotteries: Delaware, District of Columbia, Iowa, Idaho, Hoosier (Indiana), Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Wisconsin and West Virginia. The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) is a non-profit, government-benefit association owned and operated by its member lotteries. Each MUSL member offers one or more of the games administered by MUSL. All profits are retained by the individual lotteries and are used to fund projects approved by the legislature authorizing each lottery.
